75 in 2012 – #1

So first day of the year, first book off the list, first review.

Granted it was only 111 pages long but I did set up to have some short books to allow for the longer works I plan to read.

A Little Red Book of Vampire Stories by John Maclay was a book I ordered off a website, now forgotten. I can’t say what drew my attention to the book or why I decided to buy it but I am glad I did. It is a first edition printing, 1 of 500 signed and numbered by the author.

There are 10 stories in the book.

Renewing Marvin
Habits of the Canine Vampire
The Angel of Death
Vampire’s Daughter
Salem Morning

The stories are snapshots into areas and ways that you wouldn’t expect a vampire to be. My favorite story was Bloodsuckers. All of them have a bit of a twist to them, but the one in that story made me smile.

It’s a good book for a quick mental getaway. It would have been nice if the stories were longer just because you want to stay with them for a while. But each presents a clear picture of the tale and you feel you know the characters.

Script Frenzy nears

Script Frenzy

Script Frenzy begins in 10 days. It is a sister program to National Novel Writing Month. During the month of April we set out to write a 100 page script.

Much like with NaNoWriMo before last November, I have not won Script Frenzy. That will of course change this year as I already have the frame ready for the winner’s cerficiate.

It’s going to be a second attempt using a RPG I used to run as  source material, VAMrPS. The difference is this time it will be more a prequel, from before the time when my two MCs were in control of the cities. I’m seeing it as being a series pilot movie, so leaving it open ended but having to give it a definite direction.

I also have to work on making them their own people and more removed from just being avatars for the actors I was using to play them. More than anything that will be the prewriting that needs to be done.

Sorry, bout the wait, been working on getting a separate blog set up.

Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you mad. ALDOUS HUXLEY

When you think about it, it fits in with the better known quote about the truth setting you free. Madness is very freeing in its way. How much of a gift/curse that freedom is depends on how it manifests. But sometimes even the scary ways are just as desirable as the more pleasant ones. The trick is know your madness.

Charles vs Erik- The Same Old Arguement

Professor X and Magneto. The two sides of the same coin, the comic world version of Dr. King and Malcolm X.

You think you are right?
Can you not see?
We need to work with them not against them.
Are we truly that different from them?

You think you are right?
Will you not see?
They would us die rather than live with them.
We are different enough.

What you speak of
How is it different from what They did?
Do you wish to be like them?

What you hint at,
It is become like They were.
Or once again become like we were.

They will learn.
Give them the chance to.
They have accepted others in the past.

They have never learned.
Too many chances already.
Accepted, or merely tolerated?

They fear us.

As well they should.

I wish for peace.

As do I.

We can have it with them.

No, we cannot.

Shared-A Buffy/Angel songfic

So there was no tweet worth talking about for Tuesday, which worked cause I wanted to post an old fic of mine. It is missing my usual sex, but there is violence so we will rate this Mature. And you will see why my nom de plume is DarkenHeart. The song is ‘Bother’ by Stone Sour.

His gaze fell around the stone room. His home. There hadn’t been much. Now there wasn’t even that. He listlessly walked about, kicking at things. His foot connected with the radio, jarring it into life. He gave a passing thought to flicking it off. He shrugged. Who cares? The tears started down his face. yeah, who cares?

Wish I was too dead to cry
My self-affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater

She tossed and turned in her bed. She had known something was wrong when she came home. But as usual no one was telling her anything. A face flashed in her mind. No, it couldn’t be him.

You don’t need to bother;
I don’t need to be
I’ll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won’t let go ’til it bleeds

The apartment was suddenly too large and empty. It hadn’t always felt that way. But he had driven out the only thing that made it feel like a home. He had messed up as usual. He was nothing if not dependable in that respect. His hand reached for the radio. Trying to force the quiet back.

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me shit to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this, I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

She stared out the window. What was supposed to be a joyous day had fell to ruin. This town wouldn’t let them be happy. No, it wouldn’t let him be happy.

You don’t need to bother;
I don’t need to be
I’ll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won’t let go ’til it bleeds

The radio next door drove home how thin the walls were. Home. He had taken home away from the one person who needed it the most. The one person of them all who deserved it. It was true what they said about Good Intentions.

Wish I’d died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

Her hand faltered in its writing. Her family was falling apart and she didn’t know how to stop it. If only they could see. Others were to blame. But their hatred was reserved for him.

And you don’t need to bother;

Wood beckoned.

I don’t need to be

Metal beckoned.

I’ll keep slipping farther

Glass beckoned.

But once I hold on,
I won’t let go ’til it bleeds

Song Shared.

Three young women were suddenly startled out of their thoughts and sleep. Something had hold of their hearts, squeezing them tight. They had to go. Had to stop him.

Hardly knowing how they found themselves where they needed to be, each threw herself against the door and toward the solitary figure inside.

Stopped the Stake.
She held him as he cried for the love denied him.

Stopped the Bullet.
She held him as he cried for the love he had driven away.

Stopped the Needle.
She held him as he cried for the love he had lost.

In a right world, that’s how it would have been. But then, none of them knew a right world.

Dream Shared.

You don’t need to bother;

Dawn jumped down the ladder, her hand reaching for Spike as the stake pierced his heart.

I don’t need to be

Willow tore down the bedroom door, her hand reaching for Xander as the bullet tore thru his brain.

I’ll keep slipping farther

Fred unlocked the door and flew into the room, her hand reaching for Wesley as the needle sent the poison into his veins.

But once I hold on…
I’ll never live down my deceit

Reality Shared.

Clash of the Old Guard: The Undertaker vs Triple H

Rewatching Raw. Only HHH and Taker could put on such a great promo without saying a word. #wwe

Yes, I am one of those people who watches pro wrestling. I don’t watch every week, but I try to keep a hand in. I couldn’t tell you what year I started watching but it has been off and on for over two decades. It is an honest interest as my great-great-grandmother used to go see the matches back home, though I didn’t learn that til I had been watching for many years.

My two favorite wrestlers are The Undertaker and Triple H, in that order. They are the last of an era from before the WWE was brought to the forefront of pop culture. They are the ‘Old Men’ in the locker room that the other guys look up to and ask for advice. They have been in the game a long time and still give the young ones a run for their money.

The video below is heralding of the return of both men after long hiatuses from the shows. Don’t worry, if you hate wrestling you are not going to see any. Just two pros telling a story without saying a damn thing. This, ladies and gentlemen, is Art.

The preceding post was the first of a new thing I am trying, commenting on a tweet that caught my attention and more than likely RT’d. I can’t promise the entries are going to be deep in any real way, but it’s something I am going to attempt to do once every day.

The next one was also tweeted today, but I am going to save it for tomorrow.

Adam Baldwin

[ Post ] The man they call Jayne turns 49 today! http://bit.ly/et7Bmt

Today is Adam Baldwin’s birthday. If you are of an age like mine, then the first time you saw him was in My Bodyguard (or at least in the commercial in my case). I don’t think I saw him in a movie til D.C. Cab and that was on cable. But if you remember him in a little TV movie (remember those?) called Pigs vs Freaks, than that is something.

The man has too many other credits to mention, including Independence Day and more famously Full Metal Jacket. But he will always have a place in my heart for playing Jayne Cobb on the far too short lived series, Firefly, and its hard won movie sequel, Serenity.

From Adam’s favorite scene in one of his fav episodes of Firefly, I give you his performance of  ‘The Hero of Canton’.

Out West – The Leaving

I made sure the night I left my life was a moonless night. What I was doing did not need to be seen. Someone might just have tried to stop me and I couldn’t let that happen.

I had packed up during the day, little by little, taking only what I knew I would need. It took a lotta thought before I took those two things of her along too. The bundle had to be small enough for my trailing horse to carry it with room for any food I found along the way. I was not planning to be near any towns til I crossed the border.

I had filled up the lamp with oil before the sun had gone down and lit it as soon as it was dark. I stood in the middle of the room and looked at what had been my home for five years. Then I grabbed my pack and left the lamp burning on the table. If someone happened to see the light and came to take a look, well then they could have anything I had left behind. If the house ended up burning down, it wasn’t going to go any further. There was nothing on that dry land to endanger anyone around.

I loaded up my trailing horse and got him set before saddling up my main horse. I think he knew something was different, maybe even wrong. But he stood patient while I did the last bit of chores before mounting up.

The man who had come thru on the stage could not stop talking about that place. Said a man could reinvent himself, be anything he pleased. It didn’t matter much to me where I ended up, but the man’s words gave me a direction at least.

Promise made

Last night was the Winter Solstice/Lunar Eclipse. I thought about staying up but didn’t. I was going to do a ritual for the occasion, you have to figure it would be a great time for some kind of work to be done.

Bout 2230 (10:30 pm) or so I let the dog out for a quick leak. The sky was cloudy and the moon was almost straight overhead. I decided to do just something right then, nothing planned. That is usually what happens, I make plans to have a big to-do about something, then just end up standing outside let it fly.

A quick turn to the Bears/Vikings game to check the score reminded me that today was going to be the first day of Winter. So I went from that and ended up making a promise to dig deeper into how I feel about the people in my life, my views on my religion and how I see myself. With only Mani to witness it, I swore to do this before the next full moon, January 19.

I got the feeling at the end that the vow was accepted so now I have to keep to it. I made a decision to talk to a person who I have a difference of viewpoint with, instead of just thinking of dreadful things to be done to them. For me, that is very much progress.
